Thunderstorm is the single most profitable standard weather event in Grow a Garden. When it hits, Shocked (100x) becomes rollable — and Shocked is the highest-multiplier mutation available without a Black Hole, Sun God, or other rare admin weather event. For players who want consistent access to 100x+ multipliers, Thunderstorm sessions are the answer.

This guide covers exactly what storm weather does to mutation rolls, which pets amplify your chances, and how to set up your farm before the storm hits to maximize the number of crops you can harvest inside the window.

What Storm Weather Actually Does

Storm weather in Grow a Garden isn't just visual. Each weather event enables a specific set of mutations that can only roll while that weather is active. For Thunderstorm and Super Storm specifically:

WeatherMutations EnabledMultipliers
ThunderstormShocked, Wet, Cracked100x, 2x, 4x
Super StormShocked, Drenched, Cracked, Wet100x, 5x, 4x, 2x
Tropical RainDrenched, Wet5x, 2x
RainWet, Moist2x, 3x
TornadoTwisted, Windstruck5x, 2x

The critical point: Shocked only rolls during Thunderstorm or Super Storm. No other weather event enables it. If you want Shocked, you need an active storm. There's no substitute pet or fertilizer that replicates it outside of storm weather.

💡 Pro Tip: Super Storm is strictly better than Thunderstorm for mutation farming — it enables Shocked AND Drenched (5x), whereas Thunderstorm only adds Wet (2x) on top of Shocked. If both weather types are available in the rotation, prioritize planting and harvesting during Super Storm windows.

Pet Loadout for Storm Farming

Your pet loadout during a storm determines how often Shocked rolls and what additional mutations stack on top. Equip these before the storm hits — swapping pets mid-grow doesn't apply to crops already planted.

PetEffect During StormPriority
RaijuDirectly boosts Shocked roll rate during Thunderstorm/Super Storm⭐ Highest — equip if you have it
FireflyAmplifies Shocked mutation during storm weather⭐ Highest — alternative to Raiju
Sea Turtle / KappaBoosts Wet mutation — adds a 2x on top of your ShockedGood secondary — Wet stacks with Shocked
BadgerBoosts Cracked (4x) from Earthquake/Super StormUseful during Super Storm only
ButterflyCan land Rainbow (50x) if 5+ mutations already on cropInclude if your stack is deep enough

💡 Pro Tip: If you have both Raiju and Firefly, equip Raiju as your primary Shocked amplifier and use the second slot for Sea Turtle to pick up Wet (2x) as a free stack on top. Shocked (100x) × Wet (2x) = 200x baseline, which is better than Shocked alone before any other mutations land.

What Not to Do During a Storm

Two common mistakes that cost players value during storm windows:

  1. Harvesting too early. Mutations roll at the moment of harvest, not at the moment of planting. A crop planted before the storm but harvested after it ends loses its chance at Shocked. Wait for the storm to be active at harvest time.
  2. Mixing up storm and Plasma. A frequent community misconception is that storms produce Plasma mutations. They don't. Plasma (5x) comes from Laser Storm weather and the Peach Wasp/Radioactive Stegosaurus pet — a different and far less common event. Regular Thunderstorm gives Shocked, not Plasma. Don't rebalance your farming around Plasma during a standard storm.

Planting Strategy for Storm Windows

The goal is to have as many crops reaching harvest maturity as possible while the storm is active. Here's the setup sequence:

Step 1: Identify short-cycle crops

Plant crops with grow times under 2 minutes so you can run multiple harvest cycles inside a single storm window. Carrot (7s), Strawberry (30s), and Blueberry (45s) let you harvest repeatedly. Long-cycle crops like Dragon Fruit (30m) are harder to time against a storm.

Step 2: Pre-plant 5–10 minutes before storm conditions appear

Weather in Grow a Garden has a transition period before it fully activates. Plant your fast-cycle crops as the weather begins changing so they're ready to harvest when the storm peaks. Check the in-game weather indicator — storm warnings show before the full event begins.

Step 3: Equip your storm loadout before planting

Pets apply their bonuses to crops that are already growing — equip Raiju and Firefly before planting, not at harvest time. If you swap pets mid-grow, the crops already in the ground don't benefit from the change.

Step 4: Harvest in rapid cycles

With short-cycle crops, you can run 3–6 harvest cycles during a single storm window. Each harvest gives another roll at Shocked. Volume of rolls matters here — Shocked has a real drop rate, not a guaranteed trigger. The more harvests you complete during the storm, the higher your odds of landing at least one Shocked crop in the session.

💡 Pro Tip: Carrot (7-second grow time) is the fastest cycle crop in the game. During a storm, you can harvest a full plot of Carrots every 7 seconds. The base value is low, but the Shocked (100x) roll applies equally — a 20 Sheckle Carrot with Shocked is worth 2,000 Sheckles, and you're getting dozens of rolls per minute. For pure Shocked farming, Carrot volume beats high-value-crop patience.

Stacking Storm Mutations with Variants

Storm sessions are one of the few times you can realistically land both high-tier Standard mutations and a Variant mutation in the same crop. Here's the target stack for a high-value storm session:

  • Shocked (100x) — from Thunderstorm, amplified by Raiju/Firefly
  • Wet or Drenched (2x or 5x) — free stack from storm weather, amplified by Sea Turtle
  • Gold (20x) — from Gold Fertilizer or Dragonfly pet, lands on top as a Variant

Combined multiplier: 100 × 2 × 20 = 4,000x on any crop. On a Dragon Fruit (base 15,000 Sheckles): 15,000 × 4,000 = 60 million Sheckles from one crop.

FAQ — Storm and Shocked Mutation Questions

Does Shocked mutation only appear during Thunderstorm?

Yes. Shocked (100x) only rolls during Thunderstorm and Super Storm weather. No fertilizer, standard pet, or other weather event enables Shocked. The Raiju and Firefly pets boost your Shocked roll rate during those storms, but only when the weather is already active.

Does Plasma come from Thunderstorm?

No — this is a common misconception. Plasma (5x) comes from Laser Storm, a different and rarer weather event, as well as from the Peach Wasp and Radioactive Stegosaurus pets. Regular Thunderstorm produces Shocked, not Plasma.

Can I get Shocked and Drenched on the same crop?

Yes — during Super Storm, both Shocked (100x) and Drenched (5x) are simultaneously rollable. Landing both gives you a 500x combined multiplier before any Variant or additional mutations. Super Storm is strictly better than regular Thunderstorm for this reason.

What is the best crop to plant during a Thunderstorm?

For maximizing roll volume: Carrot (7s grow time). For maximizing value per roll: high-base crops like Dragon Fruit (15,000 base) or Mushroom (100,000 base) — but these have 30–90 minute grow times that are harder to align with storm timing. See our Dragon Fruit ROI Analysis for the full comparison.

Does my pet loadout affect Shocked if I change pets mid-grow?

No. Pet bonuses apply to crops at the time of planting, not at harvest. Equip Raiju or Firefly before you plant your storm crops. Changing pets after planting does not retroactively affect crops already in the ground.

How long do storm weather events last?

Weather event durations vary by type and can change with game updates. As a general pattern, Thunderstorm lasts long enough for 3–5 cycles of short-grow crops. Monitor the in-game weather indicator and plan your planting around the remaining window shown.
