The Strongest Battlegrounds — Character Tier List & Beginner Guide (May 2026)
The Strongest Battlegrounds is a PvP arena game built around One Punch Man characters, developed by Yielding Arts. The premise is straightforward: pick a character and fight. The execution is anything but. This is a timing-heavy, mechanic-dense game where understanding your kit, managing cooldowns, and knowing when to block versus when to break block determines whether you win or get demolished in the first exchange.
This guide covers the current character rankings and what makes each tier pick worth using — plus beginner fundamentals to get you past the "what am I doing wrong" phase as fast as possible.
Data note: The Strongest Battlegrounds received its most recent balance update in February 2026. The tier rankings below reflect post-update community consensus. Cosmic Garou and 3v3 Ranked Mode are upcoming additions confirmed by the developers — exact release dates are not yet known. Tier placements may shift when those changes go live.
Character Tier List — May 2026
| Tier | Character | In-Game Name | Why They're Here |
|---|---|---|---|
| S+ | Saitama | The Strongest Hero | Indefinite awakening, lowest cooldowns, Death Counter |
| S | Genos | Destructive Cyborg | CD reset after finisher, range attacks, high DPS |
| S | Atomic Samurai | Blade Master | Strong sustained output, consistent hitboxes |
| A | Garou | Hero Hunter | 7 block-bypasses, Armor passive — held back in 1v1 by damage ceiling |
| A | Tatsumaki | Tornado of Terror | Control toolkit; expected to rise in 3v3 Ranked |
Characters not listed above either have limited current community data or fall below A tier in 1v1 competitive play. This list will be updated when Cosmic Garou goes live.
S+ Tier: Saitama (The Strongest Hero)
Saitama is the best character in the game right now, and the reasons are structural rather than just raw numbers. Three things set him apart:
Indefinite Serious Mode awakening. Every other character in The Strongest Battlegrounds has a timed awakening — you activate it, it runs out, you wait for it to recharge. Saitama's Serious Mode stays active indefinitely once triggered. This eliminates the awakening management micro-game that limits every other character.
Lowest average cooldown in the game at 16.25 seconds. Across his full kit, Saitama's moves come back faster than comparable damage moves on other characters. More uptime on moves means more consistent pressure.
Death Counter. This move is nearly a guaranteed win if it connects. It's a high-risk, high-skill play — but having it in the kit means opponents have to account for it in their approach, which shapes every engagement you're in.
Saitama is also the recommended starting character for beginners (more on this below). His move set is readable and his cooldowns are forgiving enough that newer players can learn the game's fundamentals without constantly fighting their own character.
S Tier: Genos (Destructive Cyborg) & Atomic Samurai (Blade Master)
Genos
Genos earns S tier through his cooldown reset mechanic. After landing a finisher move, Genos gets a full skill cooldown reset — the only character with this property. In practice, this means a well-executed Genos combo doesn't end when his moves go on cooldown. It ends when he runs out of health or makes a mistake.
He also has the best ranged attack options in S tier, which makes him effective against characters who try to create distance. High damage, good range, and the reset mechanic make him the most technically demanding character at high level — but the payoff is legitimate.
Atomic Samurai (Blade Master)
Atomic Samurai has consistent hitboxes and strong sustained damage output. He doesn't have Saitama's indefinite awakening or Genos's reset — he just reliably deals damage through a grounded, sword-based kit. He's less flashy than Genos in competitive play, but his kit punishes opponents who try to out-sustain rather than out-play, which is common in lower-to-mid level matches.
A Tier: Garou (Hero Hunter) & Tatsumaki
Garou
Garou has the highest block-bypass count in the game at 7. If your opponent is turtling behind block, Garou punishes it better than anyone. He also has an Armor passive that provides baseline damage reduction, making him a slightly more durable option in sustained fights.
The gap between Garou and the S-tier characters is real: in a straight 1v1 against Saitama or Genos, Garou's damage ceiling leaves him at a disadvantage. His Armor helps, but it doesn't close the output gap. He works best when you use the block-bypass count aggressively rather than playing a conservative game.
Tatsumaki (Tornado of Terror)
Tatsumaki's control kit is undervalued in 1v1 formats but becomes notably stronger in team scenarios. The incoming 3v3 Ranked Mode is expected to push Tatsumaki higher in the meta — crowd-control abilities that might feel limited in a single duel become much more valuable when you're disrupting multiple opponents at once.
Upcoming: Cosmic Garou & 3v3 Ranked Mode
Cosmic Garou is a new transformation for Hero Hunter (Garou), currently in development by Yielding Arts. Based on community previews and developer communication, it's expected to push Garou toward S+ territory — potentially the strongest single addition to the game since its launch. Once Cosmic Garou releases, expect the tier list to shift meaningfully.
3v3 Ranked Mode is also confirmed as coming. When it arrives, team-fight utility becomes a real ranking factor. Characters with area control and disruption tools (Tatsumaki, Garou) are widely expected to climb from their current 1v1 standings. Genos's reset mechanic also becomes more explosive in team contexts where he can reset off multiple finishers.
We'll update this guide when either change goes live with verified data, not speculation.
Beginner Guide — How to Start Winning
Start with Saitama
Saitama is the correct starting character — not because he's easy to carry with (he isn't), but because his kit is readable and his cooldowns are forgiving. When you're learning the game's fundamentals, you want a character that doesn't punish you for being new on top of punishing you for making mechanical mistakes. Saitama's move set teaches timing without throttling your options.
Don't Spam M1 Against Blockers
If an opponent is holding block and you're just spamming basic attacks, you're doing nothing useful. Block in The Strongest Battlegrounds absorbs M1 hits. Breaking block requires a specific mechanic: Downslam or a grab skill. Learn which moves in your kit have these properties and build your offense around them when you're facing a defensive player.
Ping Matters — Adjust Your Game Plan
The Strongest Battlegrounds is a timing-heavy game, and timing is directly affected by connection latency. If your ping is high, don't try to execute complex aerial combos or multi-hit techniques — the timing windows you see on-screen don't match what the server registers. Stick to ground-based combos where the execution margin is wider. Aerial tech is a high-ping trap for new players.
Learn What Awakening Does for Your Character
Every character except Saitama has a timed awakening state that changes their move set and power level. Learn when your awakening is worth activating (winning a close fight, punishing a mistake) versus when you're wasting it (activating it just because it's available, then losing it with no return). This is the skill gap between players who plateau at mid-level and those who don't.
FAQ
- Who is the best character in The Strongest Battlegrounds?
- Saitama (The Strongest Hero) in S+ tier — indefinite Serious Mode, 16.25s average cooldown across his kit, and Death Counter make him the most consistent pick in 1v1 competitive play.
- Is Garou good in Strongest Battlegrounds?
- Garou is A tier and genuinely strong — 7 block-bypasses and an Armor passive give him tools the S-tier characters lack. His ceiling in 1v1 against Saitama and Genos is the limiting factor. Once Cosmic Garou releases, his ranking is expected to jump significantly.
- When is Cosmic Garou coming out?
- No confirmed release date as of May 7, 2026. The developers have confirmed it's coming and community previews suggest it will push Garou toward S+ tier, but no date has been announced.
- How do I break block in Strongest Battlegrounds?
- Use a Downslam or a grab skill — basic M1 attacks don't break block. Each character has at least one move with block-break properties. Learn which ones they are and build your offense around them against defensive players.
- What is 3v3 Ranked Mode in Strongest Battlegrounds?
- An upcoming team format confirmed by the developers. No release date yet. It's expected to raise the value of control and disruption characters like Tatsumaki in the meta.
- Is Strongest Battlegrounds still being updated?
- The most recent balance update was February 2026. Two major additions (Cosmic Garou and 3v3 Ranked Mode) are confirmed upcoming content, so active development is ongoing.
