Items & Gear Database
All 230 documented items — effects and exact sources. Updated July 2026.
Synced from the 99 Nights in the Forest community wiki's Items page (fetched 2026-07-02). Effects are quoted as the wiki documents them — nothing invented.
99 Nights in the Forest has 230 documented items across 20 categories. The best axe is the Chainsaw (hold to continuously chop, from Ruby Chests or the Workshop); the biggest sack is the Giant Sack (25 slots, from Legendary/Gold Chests or the Pelt Trader); and the four colored keys (Red, Blue, Yellow, Grey) drop from the last guardian at each missing kid's cave. Search the full database below by name, effect, or source.
Upgrade Paths That Matter Most
Two progressions carry every run: your axe (wood income) and your sack (carry capacity). Hit counts and slot counts below are the wiki's own numbers.
🪓 Axe Progression
- Old Axe — 13 hits per tree (you spawn with it)
- Good Axe — 5 hits (Common/Good Chests, Pelt Trader 1st trade)
- Strong Axe — one-hits normal trees, 35 for big trees (Legendary/Gold Chests, Pelt Trader 4th trade)
- Chainsaw — “the most efficient axe”: hold to chop continuously (Ruby Chests, Workshop)
🎒 Sack Progression
- Old Sack — 5 slots (you spawn with it)
- Good Sack — 15 slots (Chests, Pelt Trader 1st trade)
- Infernal Sack — 20 slots + auto-cooks raw food (Infernal Chests, Cultist King)
- Giant Sack — 25 slots (Legendary/Gold Chests, Pelt Trader 3rd trade)
All sacks gain +2 slots with the Scavenger class.

Items FAQ
How many items are in 99 Nights in the Forest?
The community wiki documents 230 items across 20 categories — tools, weapons, armor, food, fish, seeds, fuel, scrap, pelts, materials, healing, keys, blueprints, and more. This database lists every one with its effect and exact sources, and re-syncs as the wiki grows.
What is the best axe in 99 Nights in the Forest?
The Chainsaw — the wiki calls it "the most efficient axe," and unlike other axes you can hold the attack button to deal continuous damage. It comes from Ruby Chests or the Workshop. Next best is the Strong Axe (one-hits normal trees, 35 hits for big trees) from Legendary Chests, Gold Chests, or the Pelt Trader's fourth trade. For comparison: the starting Old Axe needs 13 hits per tree and the Good Axe needs 5.
What is the best sack (inventory upgrade)?
The Giant Sack holds the most at 25 items (27 with the Scavenger class), from Legendary Chests, Gold Chests, or the Pelt Trader's third trade. The Infernal Sack holds 20 but auto-cooks raw food you store in it — a genuinely useful perk on long runs. You start with the Old Sack (5 slots) and the Good Sack (15) is an easy early upgrade from chests or the Pelt Trader's first trade.
What do the colored keys open?
Each colored key opens one of the four locked caves holding a missing kid, and each drops from the last guardian you kill at that cave: the Red Key from the Dino Kid's guardian Wolves, Blue from the Kraken Kid's Alpha Wolves, Yellow from the Squid Kid's Bears, and Grey from the Koala Kid's Bears. The Frog Key is separate — it comes from Blue or Purple Frogs and fishing in key spots. See our Missing Children rescue guide for the full walkthrough.
How do you heal in 99 Nights in the Forest?
Bandages and Medkits are the dedicated healing items — both found around the map, in the Clinic, in structures, and in chests. Several foods also heal: Cake, Hearty Stew (Cook class Crock Pot), BBQ Ribs, Carrot Cake, and Jar o' Jelly (Chef class).
How do you get Infernal weapons and gear?
Infernal gear (Infernal Sword, Infernal Crossbow, Infernal Sack, Infernal Helmet) comes from Infernal Chests and the Cultist King. The wiki also documents a Volcano sacrifice cycle: every 8th sacrifice charge cycles rewards, with the 24th charge paying out an Infernal Sword or Infernal Crossbow at 50/50. The Infernal Crossbow deals 55 damage plus a burn versus the regular Crossbow's 40.
Why do food items show fork symbols instead of hunger numbers?
That's how the wiki documents hunger values — as fork pictographs (🍴) rather than exact numbers. We reproduce them as published instead of inventing numeric values. More forks = more hunger restored.
