Roblox voice chat (VC) breaks for a small set of recurring reasons — and the fix almost always comes down to one of five things. This guide walks each one in order from "most common" to "rare but real," so you can stop scrolling old Reddit threads from 2023 with screenshots that don't match the current UI. Every step below has been verified on the Roblox client as it exists in July 2026 — and this guide was updated on July 10, 2026 to cover Roblox’s 2026 age-check and age-band changes, which are now the single most common reason voice chat “breaks.”

Quick Diagnostic: What Kind of "Not Working" Are You Hitting?

Voice chat fails in three distinct ways, and the fix depends on which one you have:

  • You can't enable voice chat at all — the toggle in Settings is missing or greyed out. → This is almost always an age-verification issue. Jump to Fix 1.
  • Voice chat is enabled but your mic isn't transmitting — other players can't hear you. → This is almost always an OS-level microphone permission. Jump to Fix 3.
  • Voice chat is enabled and your mic works, but you can't hear anyone else — you're transmitting but receiving silence. → Usually an experience-level VC override. Jump to Fix 5.

First, the 2026 change most people are hitting: age checks & age-band chat

If your voice chat worked fine until recently and one specific friend suddenly shows greyed-out voice, a muted text box, or a “can’t chat with this user” message, you are almost certainly not looking at an outage or a broken microphone. On January 7, 2026, Roblox made an age check mandatory to access any chat and began segmenting communication by estimated age band. It rolled out globally wherever chat is available (after a December 2025 pilot in a few markets), and it applies at the account level — so it follows you across mobile, PC, and console. (Roblox’s newsroom announcement)

Two things changed at once:

  1. No age check, no chat. Until you complete an age check, you get no voice or text chat at all — that’s a gate, not a bug. Phone verification no longer counts; you must use Facial Age Estimation or a government ID.
  2. Chat is now grouped by age band. Roblox lists five groups: under 9, 9–12, 13–15, 16–17, and 18+. By default you can chat with your own band plus the one directly above and the one directly below. If a friend’s estimated age lands two or more bands away from yours, default chat with them stays off — by design.

The hard line is between minors and adults: the system is built to stop anyone under 16 from communicating with adults (18+) by default. So an adult and a 14-year-old who used to talk in-game will now see chat greyed out, and no privacy toggle or microphone fix will change that. Under-9 accounts have chat off entirely until a parent completes an age check and grants consent.

Roblox layered a second change on top in mid-2026: it rolled out age-based account types — Roblox Kids (ages 5–8, chat off by default) and Roblox Select (ages 9–15, restricted chat) — that automatically place under-16 players into more limited chat tiers. If a younger player lost chat “overnight” in the summer of 2026, that reassignment is usually why. See our full explainer on Roblox Kids and Roblox Select accounts.

How to get chat back

  1. Complete your age check first. Go to Settings > Account/Verification and choose Facial Age Estimation (a short selfie video processed by Persona) or, if you’re 13 or older, government ID. Without this you have no chat at all, so it’s always step one.
  2. Check whether the band rule explains it. If the friend you can’t reach is two or more bands away (for example, you’re 18+ and they’re 13–15), the greyed-out voice is intended behavior, not a fault — nothing on the five-fix list below will restore it.
  3. If a facial estimate put you in the wrong band, redo it with ID. A common reason a friend suddenly goes grey is a facial age estimate that guessed too high or too low and dropped one of you into a non-adjacent band. Re-run verification with a government ID (13+) to correct your band.
  4. For real-life friends across non-adjacent bands, set up Trusted Connections. This is the only path to chat across bands that aren’t adjacent. Both people must be age-verified, then add each other with a real-life method — the phone Contact Importer, or by scanning each other’s in-app QR code (Settings > My QR code). Profile links and screenshots do not count. For users aged 13–17, this is what turns on Party Voice.
  5. If you or your friend is under 16, expect limits. The adult-and-minor block still applies, and Trusted Connections for minors is restricted and gated behind parental consent in Parental Controls — it is not a simple mutual opt-in.

If the person you’re trying to reach is in your own band or an adjacent one and chat is still broken, this change isn’t your problem — work through the five verified fixes below.

Fix 1: Re-verify (or finish verifying) your age

Voice chat on Roblox requires verified age 13+. Verification is done through Roblox's ID-upload flow (driver's license, passport, or state ID) or, in supported regions, a facial age-estimation flow powered by their third-party identity provider. If voice chat is missing entirely from your settings — no toggle, no entry under Privacy — you almost certainly haven't completed verification on this account, or your verification has expired/been invalidated.

  1. Go to roblox.com → Settings → Account Info.
  2. Look for the "Age Verification" section. If it shows "Not Verified" or "Pending," click "Verify Now" and complete the flow.
  3. After verification finishes (usually instant for the facial flow, up to 30 minutes for ID upload), fully close and relaunch the Roblox app. Voice chat doesn't appear until the client refreshes your account's eligibility flags.
  4. Go to Settings → Privacy → Voice Chat and toggle it on.

If verification fails repeatedly, the most common cause is a glare or blur on the uploaded ID image. Retake the photo in even lighting against a dark background. If it still fails, contact Roblox Support — third-party verification edge cases generally need a human reviewer.

Fix 2: Check the Voice Chat toggle under Privacy

Even verified accounts can have voice chat manually disabled at the account level — by you in the past, or by a parent/guardian via the account restrictions panel.

  1. Open roblox.com → Settings → Privacy (or in the mobile app: Settings gear → Privacy).
  2. Scroll to the "Voice Chat" entry.
  3. Make sure the toggle is on. If it's off, switch it on, then close and reopen the app.

If the toggle is greyed out and won't move, your account is under parental controls. Check the email associated with the parent account for the override request flow.

Fix 3: OS-level microphone permissions

This is the single most common cause of "VC is enabled but no one can hear me." Roblox respects your operating system's microphone permission, and the OS will deny it silently if Roblox isn't on the allowed list.

Windows 10 / 11

  1. Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone.
  2. Confirm "Microphone access" is On at the system level.
  3. Confirm "Let apps access your microphone" is On.
  4. Scroll down to "Let desktop apps access your microphone" — make sure this is On. The Roblox client is a desktop app, so the per-app list above this one does not include it; this lower toggle is the one that gates it.

macOS

  1. System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone.
  2. Find Roblox in the list and toggle it on. If Roblox is not in the list, launch Roblox first, attempt to use voice chat once, then re-check the list — the prompt should have triggered.

iOS / iPadOS

  1. Settings → Roblox → Microphone → set to On.
  2. Also check Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone → Roblox is enabled.

Android

  1. Settings → Apps → Roblox → Permissions → Microphone → Allow.
  2. If "Allow only while using the app" is selected and VC still fails, switch to "Allow all the time" as a test.

Fix 4: Roblox VoIP server region issues (rare but real)

Roblox's voice chat uses regional VoIP servers, and occasionally one region goes down while the rest of the platform continues working normally. Symptoms: you can launch games, you can text-chat, but voice is completely silent both directions or cuts in and out.

Check status.roblox.com for the "Voice Chat" service status. If there's an active incident, no client-side fix will help — wait it out. If voice is listed as operational but yours isn't, try switching networks (mobile data instead of home Wi-Fi, or vice versa) to rule out an ISP-level routing issue to Roblox's VoIP infrastructure.

Fix 5: The experience itself has voice chat disabled

Roblox lets game developers gate voice chat at the experience level. Some experiences disable it entirely (common in younger-skewing games), and some leave it off by default until you toggle it in the in-game settings panel. If your VC works in one game and not another, this is almost always why.

  1. In the experience, open the in-game menu (Esc on PC, or the menu icon on mobile).
  2. Look for a microphone icon in the top-left or top-right.
  3. If the mic icon shows a slash through it or appears red, click/tap it to toggle.
  4. If there is no mic icon at all, the developer has disabled voice chat for this experience. There is no client-side workaround.

Voice Chat on Xbox & PlayStation

Voice chat is officially available on consoles — PlayStation since September 2025 and Xbox since April 2026 (Roblox announcement). Console voice has an extra layer on top of the account-level age check, and that’s why “how to make Xbox Roblox VC work” trips people up. Two settings both have to be right:

1. The Roblox side (same as every platform)

  1. Be at least 13 and complete a Roblox age checkFacial Age Estimation or government ID. Phone verification is no longer accepted for voice. (Roblox: how to turn on Voice Chat)
  2. Voice chat is off by default. Inside a voice-enabled experience, tap the headphone icon (or the Voice Chat toggle in the in-experience Settings menu) to connect.
  3. It only works in experiences the developer has voice-enabled, and it must be available in your region. (Roblox: Xbox voice chat)

2. The Xbox side (the part most guides miss)

  1. Press the Xbox buttonProfile & systemSettingsAccountPrivacy & online safetyXbox privacyView details & customize.
  2. Find the control named “Others can communicate with voice, text, or invites” and set it to Everyone (or Friends). If it’s set to Block, Xbox stops Roblox voice at the system level no matter what your Roblox settings say. (Xbox privacy settings)
  3. On a child or teen account, a family-group organizer (parent) has to allow communication — from the console, Xbox.com, or the Xbox Family Settings app.
  4. Connect a working headset or mic, and don’t confuse Xbox Party Chat with Roblox’s in-experience voice chat — they’re separate systems, and being in an Xbox party can make it feel like Roblox VC is broken when it isn’t.

When None of the Above Works

If you've checked all five fixes and voice chat still doesn't work, the next step is Roblox Support. Submit a ticket at roblox.com/support with: your username, the device/OS you're using, the exact failure mode (no toggle / mic not transmitting / can't hear others), and screenshots of the relevant settings screens. Support tickets on VC issues are typically responded to within 2–3 business days.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why can’t I voice chat with my friend on Roblox all of a sudden?

Since January 7, 2026, Roblox groups chat by estimated age band (under 9, 9–12, 13–15, 16–17, 18+) and, by default, only lets you chat with your own band plus the ones directly above and below. If your friend’s estimated age is two or more bands away from yours — or if either of you hasn’t completed an age check — default voice and text turn off. It’s intended behavior, not an outage.

Why did my Roblox voice chat disappear?

The most common 2026 cause is the account-level age check: until you verify, chat is gone entirely. If you’re under 16, you may also have been moved into a Roblox Kids or Roblox Select account, which restricts or disables chat by default. Complete the age check, and if you’re a minor, have a parent adjust Parental Controls.

Why is Roblox making me do an age check just to chat?

As of January 7, 2026, Roblox requires every user to complete an age check to access chat, wherever chat is available. Until you verify — via Facial Age Estimation (a selfie video processed by Persona) or, if you’re 13+, government ID — you get no voice or text chat at all. Phone verification no longer counts.

Can adults and kids voice chat on Roblox in 2026?

Not by default. The age-band system is designed to prevent anyone under 16 from communicating with adults (18+), so an adult–minor pair will see chat greyed out even if they’re mutual friends. The only path is Trusted Connections, which for minors is restricted and requires parental consent enabled in Parental Controls.

Roblox put me in the wrong age group — how do I fix my chat?

If Facial Age Estimation guessed your age wrong and dropped you into a band that’s no longer adjacent to your friends’, re-run verification with a government ID (available to users 13+) to correct your age band. For real-life friends who still fall in a non-adjacent band, both of you can age-verify and add each other as Trusted Connections using the phone Contact Importer or by scanning each other’s in-app QR code.

How do I get voice chat to work on Roblox on Xbox?

Two things have to be set. On the Roblox side: be 13+, complete an age check (Facial Age Estimation or ID), and turn voice on with the headphone icon in a voice-enabled experience. On the Xbox side: open Settings > Account > Privacy & online safety > Xbox privacy and set “Others can communicate with voice, text, or invites” to Everyone or Friends (a parent must allow it on child or teen accounts). The Xbox section above has the full walkthrough.

My Roblox mic is green with a red dot — is it muted?

No — that means it’s working. The green graphic animating in the mic icon means your microphone is unmuted and transmitting, and the red dot means Roblox is recording audio for moderation (it always does while voice is on). A muted mic shows a red slash, not a dot. If instead you see a red triangle, that’s the malfunction indicator — work through the fixes above.

Why am I quiet in Roblox voice chat?

Usually one of three things. Roblox voice is spatial in many experiences, so you get quieter with distance — move closer to the other player. Your device or OS microphone input level may be low — raise it (and mic boost) in your system sound settings. And under the 2026 age bands, you may be inaudible to players in non-adjacent age groups entirely. There is no “you sound quiet” setting in Roblox to toggle.

Does Roblox voice chat still require age 17+?

No. Voice chat is available to age-checked accounts 13 and older. The 17+ requirement was the original launch rule and was lowered years ago.

How do I find Roblox games that have great voice chat?

Roleplay and social experiences lead the way — try our Brookhaven hub, MeepCity hub, or our BedWars hub for VC-enabled experiences worth playing.
