Fisch Beginner Guide
The first-hours loop — without the fake numbers that most guides invent.
Why this page doesn't publish its own chart. Most "Fisch beginner guides" list specific prices and stats (rod costs, species C$/kg, bestiary thresholds) that drift with every balance patch. Rather than copy those numbers into a blog post that silently goes wrong, we walk through the decisions a new angler faces and link to the sources that stay current.

How it works
Your first session
Spawn at Moosewood and complete Pierre’s tutorial — it hands you the core minigame and your starter rod. Fish the Moosewood pond until you have enough to buy the first upgraded rod at the rod shop. Sell everything at the merchant; don’t hoard.
Rod upgrade cadence
Upgrade one purchased rod tier at a time, matching each tier to a biome you can reach safely. Don’t save for a late-game rod before you can reach its biome — you’ll fish under-maxed for dozens of hours. The Fandom wiki’s rod list sorted by price is the right roadmap.
Leaving Moosewood
Once you can afford the first paid rod upgrade, Terrapin Island and Roslit Bay are the next natural stops. Roslit Bay is especially important: the Orc NPC there trades a Magma Rod for a Pufferfish, which unlocks volcanic biomes later.
Bestiary is a long-term goal
Every species you catch logs in your Bestiary. Completion milestones unlock late-game vendors (including the Destiny Rod at The Arch). Don’t chase Bestiary percentages in the first hours — focus on the biome you’re in, not completion.
Frequently asked
What rod should I buy first?
Your starter Flimsy Rod handles Moosewood. The first paid upgrade at the Moosewood rod shop is the right next step — it roughly doubles max weight and opens up nearby biomes. Check the rod shop menu for the current price; it’s the authoritative number.
How do I make money early?
Sell everything you catch in Moosewood, then move to Terrapin Island or Roslit Bay once you’ve upgraded rods. Rare species (Sturgeon in Moosewood, Arapaima in Roslit Bay) pay out much more than their Common neighbors.
How do I get the Magma Rod?
Catch a Pufferfish at Roslit Bay and trade it to the Orc NPC there. The exact species swap has been stable across patches but check the Fandom wiki in case it changes.
What are totems?
Totems temporarily change weather, time-of-day, or fog, which unlocks species gated behind those conditions. You don’t need totems in the first few hours — they matter once you’re chasing Rare or Legendary species.
