The original Grow a Garden just shipped Update 1.61.0 — officially titled "CAMPFIRE PART 3 OUT NOW! CAMPFIRE RITUAL, LEVEL 500 PETS, QOL, & MORE" — on Friday, June 20, 2026. This is the third and current stage of the Summer Camp Event that opened on June 6, and it's the patch where the event finally hands you a real grind loop: a ritual that bakes a new pet mutation onto any pet you're willing to commit, a 5x raise of the pet level ceiling, two new legendary pets, and two new high-tier crops. Plus a long QoL list that quietly fixes things players have been asking about since the original Bizzy Bees window.
If you've been logging into your garden this weekend and trying to work out what actually changed — and what's worth your Sheckles, your Bearnaby quest time, and your already-capped pets — this is the consolidated launch-week breakdown. Every number is verified; anything the wiki marks TBC stays out.
TL;DR — What Shipped in 1.61.0
- New mechanic: Campfire Ritual — performed at the Campfire (Tier 1 or higher) with the Campfire Keeper NPC. Costs 4 Inferno Shards + 1 pet of your choice. Grants the Inferno pet mutation on completion.
- New gear: Inferno Shard (Mythical) — rewarded one per 25 Bearnaby quests completed. Four are required per ritual, so the floor cost of one Inferno-mutated pet is 100 Bearnaby quests.
- New pet level cap: 100 → 500. At Level 500, the Pet Mutation Machine unlocks 4 new possible pet mutations. Lollipops are less effective on higher-level pets.
- New legendary pet (limited): Flame Bear — Campfire Workshop crafting recipe (1× Campfire Egg + 1× Polar Bear + 15,000,000 Sheckles). Trait "Flame On" shoots a fireball at a random pet every 10 minutes, restoring 10% hunger and granting 800 XP.
- New legendary pet (permanent): Shadow Cat — regular Crafting Table recipe (1× Orange Tabby + 1× Grape Seed + 1× Octobloom + 1× Grandmaster Sprinkler + 50,000,000 Sheckles). Trait "Shadow Nap" occasionally mutates fruit with the Shadow mutation.
- New Divine crop: Shadow Spine — multi-harvest, regular Crafting Station recipe (2× Beanstalk Seed + 1× Zebrazinkle + 1× Master Sprinkler + 50,000,000 Sheckles).
- New limited Legendary crop: Smoke Stalk — multi-harvest, Campfire Workshop recipe (1× Campfire Egg + 1× Godly Sprinkler + 1× Pepper Seed + 15,000,000 Sheckles).
- QoL highlights: Bee event opened to everyone, shovel-skin setting, confirmation prompt for egg-shop pet sales, trash can for leftover Easter seeds, garden-wide cosmetic pickup button, new admin weather, and an unspecified set of pet bug fixes.
The Campfire Ritual & Inferno Pet Mutation
The Campfire Ritual is the headline activity in this patch and the first event mechanic in Grow a Garden's history that permanently rewrites a pet's mutation state. Per the official update log, the ritual is run at your Campfire — not at a separate altar — and you start it by talking to the Campfire Keeper NPC, who's now camped near the fire.
The mechanical loop is simple: place 4 Inferno Shards plus the pet you want to mutate into the ritual, then wait. When the ritual finishes, you claim the pet back and it now carries the Inferno mutation. The update log explicitly notes the ritual is repeatable — "as many times as you want as long as you have the required materials" — so once you've finished the first one, every additional Inferno-mutated pet you want is just another 4 shards.
The cost-acceleration knob is your Campfire tier. From the Summer Camp Event page, the Campfire has five tiers (Tier 1 through Tier 5 / Super Fire), and the patch notes explicitly state: "The higher your Campfire tier is, the less time the ritual takes!" That bonus stacks on top of the existing per-tier crafting-speed multipliers — Tier 1 has a 100% crafting-speed bonus and Tier 5 has 500%. If you're sitting on a Tier 1 fire because you stopped feeding Ember after Part 1, this is your push to tier up before stacking rituals.
One important framing nuance: the activity name is the Campfire Ritual, while the mutation it grants is the Inferno Pet Mutation. The Inferno Shard, Inferno Mutation, and Campfire Ritual are three distinct items / pages in the official wiki — players searching "Inferno Ritual" are looking for the same thing, but the canonical name is Campfire Ritual. Use that in your guides and trade chat.
Inferno Shards — The 100-Quest Grind Math
The Inferno Shard is a Mythical-tier gear added in this patch. Per the Inferno Shard wiki page, the obtainment rule is precise and singular: "The Inferno Shard is rewarded for every 25 Bearnaby quests that players complete."
That gives the only grind math that actually matters this week:
| Goal | Inferno Shards Needed | Bearnaby Quests Required |
|---|---|---|
| 1 Inferno-mutated pet | 4 | 100 |
| 2 Inferno-mutated pets | 8 | 200 |
| 5 Inferno-mutated pets | 20 | 500 |
| 10 Inferno-mutated pets | 40 | 1,000 |
The Bearnaby NPC was added in Part 2 of the Summer Camp Event on June 13, 2026, and gives quests where you hand over a plant matching a rotating trait, mutation, and weight requirement. The trait requirement rotates every hour. The base reward is a Campfire Seed Pack per accepted plant; the existing Part 2 milestone of an Exotic Campfire Seed Pack every 50 Bearnaby quests still applies on top of the new shard reward.
So in practical terms, every 100 Bearnaby quests now yields: enough material for 1 Inferno Ritual (4 shards), 2 Exotic Campfire Seed Packs (50-quest milestones), and 100 individual Campfire Seed Packs from the per-quest reward. If you stopped grinding Bearnaby in Part 2 because the rewards plateaued, the shard layer changes that calculation in a serious way.
Practical tip: the per-hour rotating trait requirement means a planted layout of crops with a wide trait spread will keep you usable across most hourly rotations. If your garden is mono-trait, expect dead hours where you can't submit anything.
Pet Level 500 & the Pet Mutation Machine
Before this patch, the pet level cap was 100. Update 1.61.0 raises it to 500, and the upgrade isn't cosmetic — at Level 500, your pet unlocks 4 possible new pet mutations via the Pet Mutation Machine. The update log specifically calls out this as the level-500 reward, separate from the Campfire Ritual's Inferno mutation path.
Two things to flag here. First, the Pet Mutation Machine itself doesn't have a dedicated wiki page yet — the mechanic is referenced only in the update log entry. Whether the 4 new L500 mutations roll randomly per pet or are player-selectable is not documented at the time of writing. Wait for community testing before assuming you can target a specific one.
Second, the patch explicitly nerfs Lollipop-based power leveling: "Lollipops are less effective on higher level pets." The exact scaling curve isn't published, but the takeaway is clear — if your strategy for hitting L500 was stockpiling Lollipops and force-feeding capped pets, it's about to be slower than it looked the day before yesterday. Expect the meta path to L500 to lean on raw XP generation (i.e. Flame Bear's "Flame On" passive, which now matters more than it would have under the old cap) instead of consumable spamming.
For players sitting on a fully capped L100 Raccoon, Dragonfly, or Queen Bee, this is the patch you've been waiting for. The XP-curve shape past L100 isn't published yet, so don't pick a single grind target until community data is in — but the ceiling moved, and any pet you've previously written off as "maxed" is now back in play.
Flame Bear — The XP-Generating Legendary
The Flame Bear is a Legendary pet, tagged as limited on the wiki (i.e. tied to this event window). The crafting path is the Campfire Workshop, with a 1-hour craft time and the following recipe:
- 1× Campfire Egg (Mythical, crafted itself from 1× Rare Egg + 1× Mango Seed + 1,000,000,000 Sheckles)
- 1× Polar Bear (an existing in-game pet)
- 15,000,000 Sheckles
The Sheckle cost on the surface is moderate by current GAG standards, but the Campfire Egg requirement is what makes the Flame Bear an investment — every Campfire Egg costs 1 billion Sheckles plus a Rare Egg and a Mango Seed before you even start the Flame Bear's own 15M cost.
The reason it's worth that price is the trait. Per the wiki: "Flame On: Every 10 minutes, flings a fireball at a random pet, restoring 10% hunger and granting 800 XP!" That's two pieces of value rolled into one ability — passive hunger maintenance (10% restoration is meaningful for the high-hunger pets like the Bee Swarm event family) and a flat 800 XP injection per fire. Over a long AFK session, that's a steady drip of free XP onto whichever pet the fireball hits.
The Flame Bear's own hunger is high at 20,000, so keep it well-fed; an empty-stomach Flame Bear won't fire. And because the fireball targets random pets, you can't aim it — it's a broad XP-distribution tool, not a single-pet booster. If your goal is power-leveling a specific pet to L500, the play is to keep your pet roster small while the Flame Bear is active, so each 800 XP fire has a higher probability of landing on the target.
Shadow Cat — The Permanent Shadow-Mutation Pet
The Shadow Cat is the patch's other Legendary pet, but it's not tagged limited — it's a regular Crafting Table item that will remain available after the Summer Camp Event ends. The recipe is one of the more demanding non-event recipes in the game:
- 1× Orange Tabby
- 1× Grape Seed
- 1× Octobloom
- 1× Grandmaster Sprinkler
- 50,000,000 Sheckles
Craft time is 1 hour. The trait is "Shadow Nap: Occasionally mutates fruit with Shadow mutation!" — the Shadow Cat is the first guaranteed in-game source of the Shadow mutation outside the Pet Mutation Machine's random-roll path. For crop-value farmers, that's the headline.
The Shadow Cat's hunger is 2,500, which is a quarter of what most high-tier pets demand. That low maintenance cost plus a permanent (not event-locked) availability window makes this the patch's most flexible meta pet — you can craft one now, slot it for a Shadow-mutation farming run, and still have it useful months from now after the Summer Camp Event closes.
Shadow Spine — New Divine Crop
Shadow Spine is a Divine-tier multi-harvest crop. The wiki classifies it across an unusually long category list — Vegetable, Woody, Prickly Fruit, Toxic, Stalky, Root, Spooky, Sour, and tagged as a Prehistoric Plant — which means it'll match a wide range of Bearnaby trait-rotation requirements and likely high-value mutation buckets.
The crafting recipe (at the regular Crafting Station, 1-hour craft time):
- 2× Beanstalk Seed
- 1× Zebrazinkle
- 1× Master Sprinkler
- 50,000,000 Sheckles
The Shadow Spine's per-harvest Sheckle base value is currently marked TBC on the wiki — we're not publishing a number until the wiki populates it or community testing confirms it. Plan-wise, treat the Shadow Spine as a long-cycle, multi-trait pickup: it's the kind of plant whose Sheckle output is going to scale heavily with the right mutation roll (Aurora, Rainbow, Shadow from your new Shadow Cat) on top of its base. Don't anchor a strategy to specific dollar numbers yet.
Smoke Stalk — Limited Legendary Crop
Smoke Stalk is a Legendary, multi-harvest crop tagged limited to the Summer Camp Event. It crafts at the Campfire Workshop in 1 hour with:
- 1× Campfire Egg
- 1× Godly Sprinkler
- 1× Pepper Seed
- 15,000,000 Sheckles
Category mix: Toxic, Stalky, Root, Night, Spicy, Fungus. The Campfire Egg requirement again gates this behind the 1B Sheckle egg-crafting prerequisite, so plan to commit one Campfire Egg per Smoke Stalk in addition to the other materials.
Where the Shadow Spine is the permanent, generalist high-tier crop, the Smoke Stalk is the event-limited "you're only getting this if you go all-in this month" pickup. If you're forced to pick one for budget reasons, the permanence of the Shadow Spine wins long-term, but the Smoke Stalk's Night and Spicy tags fit certain mutation-roll plays the Shadow Spine doesn't.
QoL Changes Worth Knowing
The patch ships a quiet but substantial QoL list. The ones worth pausing on:
- The Bee event opens to everyone. Previously gated; the update log specifies "The Bee event can now be accessed by anyone." If you missed the Bizzy Bees windows in May, this is your second chance at that content.
- Shovel skin setting. A cosmetic toggle in settings to change shovel appearance. Pure flair, no mechanic impact.
- Confirmation prompt at the Egg Shop pet-sale flow. A direct response to the long-running complaint about accidentally selling high-value pets at the egg shop. This is small but big for anyone who's lost a Mythic pet to a misclick.
- Trash can in the Easter save slot. Discard leftover Easter seeds you no longer want — finally clearing the cluttered legacy-seed inventory from earlier 2026 events.
- "Pick up all" button for garden cosmetics. A single click in the cosmetic menu now removes every cosmetic placed in your garden. Quality-of-life for plot rearrangement.
- New admin weather. Multiple new weather types added to the admin-weather list (specific names aren't enumerated in the update log).
- UI fixes and performance improvements across devices; the UI-size setting was removed.
- Various pet bug fixes. Unspecified, but worth re-testing any pet ability you previously believed was buggy.
First-Week Priority List
- Tier up your Campfire first. Every Campfire tier above 1 directly cuts Campfire Ritual time. If you've been sitting on a Tier 1 or Tier 2 fire, submit fruit and push it before you start your ritual cycle.
- Start the Bearnaby grind today. Inferno Shards drop one per 25 Bearnaby quests, so the first ritual is gated behind 100 quests of NPC handoffs. Bearnaby's trait requirement rotates hourly — keep a wide-trait crop layout so you're never locked out of an hour.
- Craft the Shadow Cat before the Flame Bear if you can only craft one Legendary. The Shadow Cat is permanent (not event-locked), has a quarter the hunger of the Flame Bear, and is the only guaranteed in-game source of the Shadow mutation outside the Pet Mutation Machine's random rolls.
- Burn one Campfire Egg on the Flame Bear if you're targeting L500 on a specific pet. The 800 XP per fire is meaningful at scale, and the Pet Mutation Machine path to L500 just got more important now that Lollipops are nerfed.
- Hold on the Shadow Spine and Smoke Stalk until you have confirmed Sheckle values. Both recipes are expensive (50M and 15M Sheckles plus high-tier materials). The wiki marks key value fields TBC; don't go all-in on speculative ROI math.
- Pick up the QoL wins immediately. Open the Bee event if you missed it; toggle on the egg-shop sale confirmation; clear out any leftover Easter seeds with the new trash can. Free wins.
If you missed the earlier Summer Camp phases, our Part 1 Campfire launch guide covers the original event opening, the Campfire mechanics, and the first wave of additions. The full crop, mutation, and pet system for the base game is broken down in the Grow a Garden Hub.
FAQ
- When did Grow a Garden Update 1.61.0 (Campfire Part 3) launch?
- Friday, June 20, 2026. The official patch title is "CAMPFIRE PART 3 OUT NOW! CAMPFIRE RITUAL, LEVEL 500 PETS, QOL, & MORE" per the Grow a Garden Fandom wiki Update Log entry.
- What does the Campfire Ritual do?
- It's a new activity at your Campfire that grants any pet you choose the Inferno pet mutation. You need 4 Inferno Shards and the pet itself; the ritual takes less time at higher Campfire tiers. The mechanic is documented in the Update Log/1.61.0 entry on the wiki.
- How do I get Inferno Shards in Grow a Garden?
- Complete Bearnaby quests on the Summer Camp Event island. You earn one Inferno Shard for every 25 quests completed, and one Campfire Ritual costs 4 shards — so 100 Bearnaby quests gets you one Inferno-mutated pet.
- What's the new pet level cap?
- 500 (raised from 100). At Level 500, the Pet Mutation Machine unlocks 4 new possible pet mutations on that pet. Lollipops are also less effective on higher-level pets, so consumable spam is no longer the cleanest path to the cap.
- How do I craft the Flame Bear?
- At the Campfire Workshop, with 1× Campfire Egg + 1× Polar Bear + 15,000,000 Sheckles. Craft time is 1 hour. The Campfire Egg itself requires a Rare Egg + a Mango Seed + 1 billion Sheckles, so plan the egg chain in advance.
- What does the Flame Bear's "Flame On" trait actually do?
- Every 10 minutes, the Flame Bear flings a fireball at a random pet, restoring 10% of that pet's hunger and granting 800 XP. The trait fires on its own as long as the Flame Bear is fed.
- How do I craft the Shadow Cat?
- At the regular Crafting Table, with 1× Orange Tabby + 1× Grape Seed + 1× Octobloom + 1× Grandmaster Sprinkler + 50,000,000 Sheckles. Craft time is 1 hour. The Shadow Cat's "Shadow Nap" trait occasionally mutates harvested fruit with the Shadow mutation.
- Is the Shadow Cat limited to the event?
- No. Per the wiki, the Shadow Cat is permanent — the recipe is at the regular Crafting Table, not the Campfire Workshop, and it remains craftable after the Summer Camp Event ends.
- What's the Shadow Spine recipe?
- 2× Beanstalk Seed + 1× Zebrazinkle + 1× Master Sprinkler + 50,000,000 Sheckles, at the regular Crafting Station. Craft time is 1 hour. Shadow Spine is a Divine-tier multi-harvest crop; its per-harvest Sheckle base value is currently marked TBC on the wiki.
- What's the Smoke Stalk recipe?
- 1× Campfire Egg + 1× Godly Sprinkler + 1× Pepper Seed + 15,000,000 Sheckles, at the Campfire Workshop. Craft time is 1 hour. Smoke Stalk is a Legendary multi-harvest crop, tagged limited to the Summer Camp Event window.
- Is the Bee event still gated?
- No. Update 1.61.0 explicitly notes "The Bee event can now be accessed by anyone." If you couldn't access the Bizzy Bees content in May, you can now.
- Did the Lollipop XP exploit get patched?
- It wasn't called an exploit, but yes — the patch notes state lollipops are "less effective on higher level pets." Treat consumable XP as a low-cap tool, not a sprint method to L500.
