How Cooking Works

Cooking is a Cosmetic-gated mechanic in Grow a Garden. Once you place a Cooking Pot, you can combine harvested crops into dishes. The flow is:

  1. Pick a recipe from the pot menu.
  2. Fill every named slot — each slot accepts either a fixed list of crops or any crop in a category.
  3. Wait the recipe’s base cook time.
  4. Take the finished dish out and use it: sell, feed pets, give to NPCs, or hand into crafting gates.

Slot vs category. Recipes mix two slot styles. A fixed slot (e.g., Bamboo: Bamboo) accepts only the listed crops. A category slot (e.g., Filling: Sweet Crops) accepts any crop tagged with that type. Category lists are maintained on the Fandom wiki and update with each game patch — see the Crop Wiki for the live category membership.

What this page does not do. The Fandom Food page lists slots, base time, and base weight. It does not publish per-dish sell prices or NPC reward tables. Some third-party sites publish those numbers, but they are not corroborated by a primary source — so we omit them. Treat your in-game Sell Stand reading as the source of truth for sell value.

Worked Example: Cooking a Burger

The Burger recipe has three slots:

  1. Bread — pick any one of: Cauliflower, Corn, Banana, Violet Corn, or Sugarglaze. Cauliflower is the cheapest entry-tier choice (Common rarity, fast grow time).
  2. Meat — pick any one of: Glowshroom, Bell Pepper, Cactus, Eggplant, Tall Asparagus, Mushroom, Pepper, Taco Fern, Venus Fly Trap, Ember Lily, or Bone Blossom. Mushroom is the easiest early-game pick.
  3. Leafy — pick any one of: Artichoke, Onion, Jalapeno, Tomato, Avocado, Bamboo, Taro Flower, Bell Pepper, Pineapple, Grand Tomato, or Sunflower. Tomato is the standard choice.

Drop one crop into each slot, start the pot, and wait 7 min(the Burger’s base cook time). The finished Burger weighs 2kg by default.

Why three slots?Burger is a fixed-slot recipe with no category slots — every input must be drawn from the listed crops. Some other recipes (Cake, Pie, Sweet Tea) include category slots like “Sweet Crops” that accept anything in that category, giving you more substitution flexibility.

FAQ

How does cooking work in Grow a Garden?

Players combine harvested crops in a Cooking Pot to produce dishes. Each recipe has named ingredient slots (e.g., "Bread", "Meat", "Leafy") — every slot must be filled with a crop from that slot's allowed list or category. The dish then cooks for its base time and produces a finished food item with the listed base weight.

What can you do with cooked food?

Food can be sold at the Sell Stuff stand, used to feed pets to restore hunger, given to NPCs on their birthdays for rewards, or used as inputs to gated crafting recipes. The Cooking Pot itself is acquired as a Cosmetic.

Do recipe sell prices exist on this page?

No. The GAG Fandom Food page — our authoritative source for recipe data — does not publish dish sell prices. We do not speculate on sell values, so this guide intentionally lists only what the source publishes: slot inputs, base cook time, and base weight.

What is the Soup recipe?

Soup is a wildcard recipe: any crop combination that does not match another recipe will cook into a Soup. It has no fixed slot list — Soup is what the Cooking Pot produces when nothing else fits. Base time is 5 minutes, base weight 0.5kg.

How does base time relate to the actual cook time I see in-game?

Base time is the unmodified cook duration listed on the Fandom recipe page. In-game modifiers (gear, gamepasses, event boosts) can shorten it. The base time gives you the floor; treat in-game readings on top of that as the source of truth.

Can mutations on the input crops affect the cooked dish?

Crop mutations alter the crop's sell value before cooking, but the cooking system in GAG operates on the base ingredient — mutation multipliers don't carry into the cooked dish on the Fandom-documented mechanics. If you're trying to maximize cooked-food value, focus on the right slot ingredients for the right NPC reward, not on mutating the inputs.

What does "Sweet Crops" or "Fruit Crops" mean inside a recipe slot?

Some recipe slots accept any crop in a broad type category instead of a fixed list. "Sweet Crops" means any crop tagged Sweet on the Fandom wiki; "Fruit Crops" means any crop tagged Fruit; and so on. The Crop Categories Reference section below describes each category.
